We were so happy to welcome everyone from Soka International School Malaysia to Hiroshima!
Among the 20 students were students from Malaysia, Korea, and Japan.About a week before their visit to Hiroshima, we had an online pre-learning session with them.
During the session, we talked about what happened in Hiroshima, not only the physical wounds caused by the atomic bombing, but also the emotional and psychological scars it left behind. We also talked about the threat of nuclear weapons today, including nuclear testing.
At the end of the session, we took a group photo through the screen, which made us even more excited to meet everyone in person in Hiroshima.
On the day of the tour, it was raining, but the students listened carefully to the stories shared by our Peace Buddies.
One student shared a particularly thoughtful reflection: “I cannot forgive the many acts of aggression committed by Japan. But the people who lived in the Nakajima area had nothing to do with them, and children and babies should never have been killed. The tour helped me imagine the lives that once existed here.”
Hearing these words reminded us that because we all have different roots, there are so many different perspectives and ways of learning from one another.
In the afternoon, we also had a peace workshop. We talked about peace culture and war culture, and then thought about what each of us can do for peace.
We came up with ideas at three different levels: what we can do as individuals, what we can do for the people around us, and what we can do as a society.
Building on everything they had learned in Hiroshima, the students came up with so many ideas for actions that can start from things close to us and our everyday lives.
From the online pre-learning session, to the Peace Park tour, and finally the workshop, it was a very meaningful experience for us to learn together with students from different backgrounds.
