We were delighted to welcome the students from Strathmore Secondary College in Melbourne, Australia.
Before their visit, we held an online pre-learning session about the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, its lasting impact, today’s nuclear issues, and the idea of a peace culture.
After the session, students and teachers shared thoughtful reflections. Many said it helped them understand where a war culture can lead, while also giving them hope for the future. They also told us that the session made their visit to Hiroshima even more meaningful.
When we finally met in Hiroshima, it was a very special moment.
One Peace Buddy shared,
“I tried to make eye contact and carefully choose my words. The more we connected, the more I could feel that my message was reaching the students.”
During the reflection session, one student became emotional while sharing their thoughts.
A Peace Buddy responded that imagining another person’s experience is very important for caring about the conflicts and challenges in our world.
We are grateful to every student who learned with open hearts and thoughtful minds.
Knowing that we now have more friends across the ocean who share the hope for a peaceful future gives us great encouragement.
